Scallop-7-Closure 2018

Proposed temporary closure of Southern Scallops (SCA 7)

June 2018

Introduction

On 11 June 2018 Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) advised they were consulting on two options for the future management of the Southern Scallop fishery known as Scallop 7 (SCA 7) and the scallop fishery in Port Underwood. Submissions are due to FNZ by 25 June 2018.

Traditionally the scallop season opens on 15 July and closes on 15 February the following year. The SCA 7 and Port Underwood have been closed to commercial and recreational harvest for the past two years due to poor abundance of scallops.

FNZ propose two options for the upcoming season in Scallop 7 and Port Underwood:

1. Temporary closure from 15 July 2018; or

2. No closure. Season opens 15 July 2018.

Fisheries New Zealand have a stated preference for 1. Temporary closure from 15 July 2018.

NZSFC Submission. SCA 7 temporary closure. 25 June 2018

The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council submit in support of the continued closure of the Southern Scallop fishery for all of the 2018 season. This option is most likely to maximise growth of juvenile scallops and rebuild populations in areas with the most suitable habitat. When the fishery reopens a staged introduction must be applied, with non-commercial access first and commercial later, with hand gathering methods only until research into the effects of dredging has been completed.

NZUA Submission. SCA 7 temporary closure. 25 June 2018

The New Zealand Underwater Association support in part the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council-LegaSea submission on the future temporary closure of the Southern Scallop fishery. The NZUA supports the Minister in allowing for low impact, hand gathering of scallops only, and moving the season opening to 1 September each year. NZUA also propose in the longer-term a ban on recreational scallop dredging and increasing the minimum legal size of scallops for commercial and recreational harvest.
